Ross Onley-Zerkel
AKA Deaf Chef Ross

About
Welcome to my
Deaf World
My journey into the world of deafness began at birth. I cannot hear any sounds, so I communicate in Auslan on a daily basis. I use my eyes to capture details and my hands to speak.
I love food and cooking, and sharing my love of cooking with others, especially those in the Deaf community. I’ve run my business, Deaf Chef Ross, for eight years now.
At an early age, I had a vision to bring the Deaf community and the hearing world closer together, launching Bridging the Gap Training in 1996.

Passion
My Food Journey
I started cooking when I was 11 years old. My mother worked some evenings, so when I came home from school, I followed her written instructions to cook dinner to be ready when she arrived home.
I grew up in Red Hill South, Victoria, on the Mornington Peninsula, where fresh produce is everywhere. My mother and neighbours all enjoyed cooking at home. My father is a vegetarian, and he grew an enormous garden of vegetables covering half his backyard.
I also enjoy home-cooked meals, and my favourites are roasts, vegetable soups, and Asian-inspired dishes. One of the first desserts I taught myself to make was a healthy chocolate mousse with only four ingredients: cacao powder, coconut yoghurt, vanilla extract, and maple syrup.
